Soul Kitchen Set list 11-17-2009

Here you go everybody!

Sorry the internet computer was out in the studio. I finally got the set list up for you.

I did a lot of Rock Breaks in that first set.

Sometimes I get calls from people who ask me why I play stuff like that on the Soul Kitchen. The answer is: they are a big part of DJ culture. Here is why...

Many of them were discovered by the likes of Afrika Bambaataa back in the early days of Hip Hop. This is how they intertwine with Funk/Soul/Disco/HipHop and related culture.

When I say discovered, I mean in the dance floor DJ sense. Much in the way Keb Darge or Shadow "make" tracks. Stoney rockers were probably already into tracks like Billy Squire's Big Beat, but one of Bamata's contributions to hip hop was the tracks that he introduced to Hip Hop as he helped pioneer its early days. He was paramount to the eclectic trans-genre mix that permeated the block parties North of 110th St. and late 70s/early 80s Club and Disco culture in NYC.

Bambaataa's youngest DJ days consisted of parties in the projects where he grew up. He would sit with one Hi-Fi at one end of the room and signal another kid at the other end with a similar Hi-Fi with a flash light. The flashlight let the other DJ know when to start his record player because Bambaataa's song was coming to an end.
